September

Dear Friends,

As we come to the end of the Summer, and approach the Autumn Term, I have been reflecting on a period in which there has been a lot of Sporting Activities.

There was a far better than average display by English footballers in the World Cup, some much needed success in cricket, a great triumph for a Welshman Geraint Thomas in cycling, and outstanding Formula One driving by Lewis Hamilton.

However, during the European Championships, which for the first time went across sports, including Athletics (my own favourite pursuit), when we pick up a newspaper and turned to the back, we flicked over 6 sides, all reporting on football and the Transfer deadline, even before the Premier Season has got underway, and before we got to read about all the other sports that were in progress at the time.  Much as I like football this to me seemed disproportionate, especially as our nation excelled at a lot of different sports, and there was therefore much to celebrate.  I am now beginning to wonder who will be voted BBC Sports Personality of 2018 just before Christmas.  Will it be a well known celebrity or someone from one of our "minority sports"?

Reflecting on life as a church, I wonder though, on what we put most emphasis.  Do we sometimes spend a disproportionate amount of time on things which do not truly emphasise the Good News of Jesus Christ?  Do we treasure our meetings, events and activities more than seeing people develop in the faith?  Of course there are many things that need to be carried out in the life of a Church family, but when we fret and worry about whether we can get some things done and whether they will be up to standard it is important to remember that Jesus siad:

"SEEK YOU FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND HIS RIGHTOUSNESS AND ALL THESE OTHER THINGS WILL BE ADDED UNTO YOU."

So as we come into what is traditionally a busy period in the life of the Church, leading us all the way up to Advent and Christmas let us:

"FIX OUR EYES ON JESUS, THE AUTHOR AND PERFECTER OF OUR FAITH."

And take one step at a time as we All Seek, Serve and Follow Him
